First, it is so important that teachers prioritize reading interest over reading level. Students will often choose to read well above or below their reading level if they are particularly interested in a book or topic. Teachers only hurt students by limiting them to a specific selection of titles grouped according to an arbitrary number or level. Think of the books on these lists as starting places for you and your students, but if a student wants to read up (or down), that is a-ok.

I love your book lists! I read a lot and yet have only read 2 of the books on this list...I'm going to encourage my 12 yo to check out a few of these...and I'll check them out as well. I really, really loved The Girl Who Drank the Moon...a great story but with lots of wisdom tucked throughout.
Learning about American or world history doesn't need to be dry and just-the-facts. The books listed below offer an exciting look at different historical periods through the lives of real people and the events that swirled around them. The graphic novel format of Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales is rich in detail and thrilling to read. The "scrapbook histories" give young readers an intimate glimpse into the lives of famous people in history.
Audiobooks allow kids who struggle with decoding to enjoy stories above their reading level, and to connect directly with the story and the storyteller. And listening to stories exposes kids to complex, rich vocabulary and language. Audiobooks also model fluent, expressive reading and strengthen critical listening skills.
Participation is mandatory for every student entering 7th grade. Below is the list of summer reading books selected from varying literary genres from which your child will select. Many of these books are of high interest at typical reading levels. Other selections may be written at a more challenging reading level or contain more challenging content.
As you think about back-to-school reading plans, you also might want to consider your reading routines and habits for the school year. Excellent books like those below are one element of a good reading routine.
Are you looking for reading material for your 7th grader? This list has numerous books to choose from. There is also at least one free lesson for each book included on the list. These lessons vary from book to book. Some are comprehensive unit studies or novel guides, while others are simply a set of discussion questions.
Please note: As values, beliefs, and standards vary widely by family, I have not attempted to screen these books for appropriateness. I recommend that you read several reviews before choosing books for your child to read. This post lists several resources you can use to help ensure the books you choose are appropriate for your family.
I believe that learning to write well is important. By continually reading classic literature, my children are exposed to excellent models of good writing. My children also grow their vocabulary as they encounter words rarely found in modern books.
This list is a treasure trove! Thank you! Many of my favorites are included, as well as ones I hope to read some day. And most of these books also can be enjoyed as adults too with or without kids ;). My husband and I are reading Winnie-the-Pooh to each other and loving it!

While other excellent reading lists exist for students, this compilation of titles is different in that all of the recommended books, in some way, complement a Heights education. The titles found below will broaden the horizons of those who read them. Many directly correspond to what students are studying in class and can powerfully engage the imagination of a boy or young man. Some are the type that become a life-long companion, meant to be read and re-read, contributing to the formation of the man one becomes.
Many of these books are meant to form the basis for a conversation, to serve as an entry way into a generations-old dialogue on matters pertaining to the most important human realities: true love, suffering, sacrifice, heroism, evil, good, and the possibility of an ultimate meaning more powerful than death. While a student who reflectively reads and discusses selections from Heights Books with his teacher can earn extra-credit, the greatest reward will be in the human enrichment that results. As a mountain naturally invites one to climb all the way to the top, so these lists naturally present a challenge to these young men to strive for completion, a challenge to which we hope, with proper encouragement from both faculty and parents, many Heights students will rise.
After finishing the book, the student should schedule a time to discuss the book with his English or History teacher. In discussing the book, the teacher will determine if the student has read the book with a spirit of reflection and engagement. For books in the upper-grade lists, the teacher may direct the student to have a conversation with another faculty member, likely the faculty member who recommended the book and has a genuine passion for the work.
At the beginning of each academic year, textbooks are issued to each student. These textbooks remain the property of Scottsdale Prep and require a deposit that is fully refundable upon return of the textbook in permissible condition.
